Amir, My Iranian Friend

I made a new Iranian friend, Amir, an electrical engineering student up here. He has come to a few BBQs at my apartment. He also voted in the Iranian presidential election yesterday at a polling place in Redwood City, for Musavi, not Ahmadinejad, of course.

During dinner I overheard his awkward conversation with another friend who had asked whether or not Ahmadinejad would relinquish power if defeated. His response: "In my country, government has three parts--the lawyers [legislative], the judges [judiciary], and the operations [executive]. If Ahmadinejad loses, then he no longer operates." Funny, but also shows the big, dumb American stereotype holds true--we somehow believe only the worst parts of the stories we hear about Iran. My question was no better. I asked if he had seen this SNL skit. He had.

All of that is to say, I like these photos of the election. US voters should learn that the key to any successful protest is matching your eye shadow and scarf with the color of the revolution.

  1. The new format holds giant pictures well (and btw, as to newspapers dying and having trouble getting people to pay for news, I would totally pay NYTimes Co $20 per year for access to giant versions of all their photos as well as the daily crossword puzzles, pass it along). I feel less like I'm reading a blog and more like I'm reading Karl's Review of Books. Anyway, I like all Iranians I've seen pictures of, but are neither you or your friend concerned about a rigged election? I'm still gathering data on it and am not making a judgment call, hard to find actual pre-election polling numbers.

  2. Maybe I like playing the role of knowingly ignorant American? Maybe I like believing in monsters and fairy tales and Santa Claus? Maybe I like the one-sided propaganda I'm spoon-fed every day?

Really I just like awkward conversations. That and dropping dead. Nice layout, maybe I'll read your trashy blog now.

  4. Sometimes I wonder if we ever really know the truth.

    Checks and balances notwithstanding.

I like the "big picture" too - but then my eyes are old!!
