Nibley on the value of a name-brand education and the importance of the economy

But today it is not boredom or disillusionment, but conscience that raises the problem: To "seek ye first financial independence and all other things shall be added," is recognized as a rank perversion of the scriptures and an immoral inversion of values. ... Most of you are here today only because you believe that this charade [getting an education] will help you get ahead in the world. But in the last few years things have got out of hand; "the economy," once the most important thing in our materialistic lives, has become the only thing. We have been swept up in a total dedication to "the economy," which like the massive mud slides, is rapidly engulfing and suffocating everything. Here.

  1. Matt and I just watched this speech a month or so ago and I've been meaning to post it. Awesome... "here today only because you believe that this charade will help you get ahead in the world."

I took a few classes from the chair of the religion dept at BYU (S. Kent Brown, one of my favorite teachers) and whenever I went to Bro Brown's office I had to sneak a peek into Bro Nibley's. He was often there. I was always too afraid to say hi, but it would have been cool to meet him.

  2. I heard Hugh Nibley stories my whole life growing up - he was the cousin of our stake president - and he does have some interesting ideas.

I for one did not go to school to get ahead - I went to get away!! And I was usually not disappointed.
