But today it is not boredom or disillusionment, but conscience that raises the problem: To "seek ye first financial independence and all other things shall be added," is recognized as a rank perversion of the scriptures and an immoral inversion of values. ... Most of you are here today only because you believe that this charade [getting an education] will help you get ahead in the world. But in the last few years things have got out of hand; "the economy," once the most important thing in our materialistic lives, has become the only thing. Matt and I just watched this speech a month or so ago and I've been meaning to post it. Awesome... "here today only because you believe that this charade will help you get ahead in the world."
ReplyDeleteI took a few classes from the chair of the religion dept at BYU (S. Kent Brown, one of my favorite teachers) and whenever I went to Bro Brown's office I had to sneak a peek into Bro Nibley's. He was often there. I was always too afraid to say hi, but it would have been cool to meet him.
I heard Hugh Nibley stories my whole life growing up - he was the cousin of our stake president - and he does have some interesting ideas.
ReplyDeleteI for one did not go to school to get ahead - I went to get away!! And I was usually not disappointed.
